A local neuroscientist leading a team of 10 people in groundbreaking Altzheimer’s research has lost 6 months of research data and analysis.
Because his laptop was stolen. And he had no backup of the data.

A friend of mine with 3 computers thought her irreplaceable photographs, original writing, and financial data data was safe, because she backed everything up on the other computers.
Someone stole all 3 computers.
She had no other backup of the data.
If you’re one of the people who is always “gunna” back up their computer, why not do something about it today. there’s 3 easy steps.
- Buy one of the cheap pocket hard drives. A 500 gigabyte drive costs around $150 from Officeworks, and will fit in your shirt pocket. Just plug it into a USB port. No power cables needed.
- Get a good backup program (I recommend Acronis True Image)
- Install the program, plug in the drive, and backup your computer.
If it gets stolen tomorrow, you’ll wish like hell that you had taken this advice.
Yes, I know, in the past computer backups were a pain in the neck to do. That’s not the case these days.
It takes less than thirty seconds to plug in the drive and start the backup program.
If you’ve got important stuff on your laptop and don’t back it up, you’re a bloody idiot.
cheers,

Hey Eric!
Thought I’d stop by and check out your site again. I just started building my first site with Atahualpa today. Cool theme. A little bit of a learning curve from Flexibility2, but so many more options. It’s going to be fun to see what I can do with it.
Read your post on backups. I use an external hard drive and an online backup just in case. I have the online set for twice a day and I try to do the local every two or three days. I forget sometimes so the online is great just in case. I am a little paranoid. I never had a computer stolen, but I had one crash once. The geeks got some of my info back but not nearly all. With all that I have going now, it would be a disaster!
Don’t you think it’d be better to think carefully about this? That’s not to imply you’re incorrect, but when you write something like this, it will upset some people. And I wonder if you’ve given thought to the opposite side of this statement.
I’ve approved this comment to demonstrate a certain type of forum spam that looks like a genuine comment, but is pretty meaningless and is there just to get a backlink to their website.
If you allow comments on your blog, you;ll probably get lots of these. At least this one looks as thought it goes goes to an actual website. Most go to really dodgy looking places.
